Q: Can you give me some idea as to which perennials/annuals do well in a shade garden?

A: There are a number of perennials that do well in shade. Bleeding Heart, Hosta’s, Astilbe, Barrenwort, Heuchera, Joe Pye Weed, Masterwort, Pulmonaria, Lady’s Mantle and a host of others. Annuals for shade include Begonia’s, Impatiens, Coleus, white and blue Browalia.

Q: How do I know when house plants need watering?

A: Plants need to be watered when the top 1” of soil is dry to the touch. Water thoroughly till water runs out the bottom of the pot. Do not let plants sit in water. ttr

Q: When and how often do you fertilize a lawn?

A: Typically, a lawn is fertilized at least three times per year. The first application should take place about the end of May, the second application the middle of July and the third application , for winter care, around the middle of September. A good slow release fertilizer, such as Scott’s Turf Care is best, as it cuts down on the number of times one has to apply it.

Q: When would I start seeds for planting outdoors?

A: Most seeds are to be started indoors between 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost day, which is typically May 24th on the Prairies. There are some seeds that require a longer germination, such as fibrous begonias, geraniums and impatiens.
