SHS Board of Directors Meetings

Description:   The Saskatoon Horticultural Society (SHS) holds
                        monthly Board of Director Meetings to discuss
                        and implement the governance of the SHS.
                        Members are encouraged to attend and introduce
                         themselves to the Board of Directors.
Dates:             February 9, March 9, April 13, May 11, June 8,
                        July 13, August 10, September14, October 12.

Gardenscape

Description:    An annual tradeshow featuring a variety of
                         exhibitors. Come visit the Saskatoon
                         Horticultural Society Booth for lots of neat
                         gardening ideas. Learn about the various
                         events and scholarships/bursaries the SHS
                         offers. It is a great time to renew your SHS
                         membership and get discounts off at
                         participating retailers. See you there!.

Tree/Shrub Pruning Workshop

Description:    Come join, ISA Certified, Arborist Robin Adair
                         from Arbour Crest Tree Service for a hands-on
                         pruning workshop. The pruning basics of how,
                         when, where and why will be discussed in a
                         class setting. Then a hands-on component will
                         continue outside. The focus will be on proper
                         pruning cuts on shrubs and fruit trees. As well,
                         larger tree care will be discussed. Please bring
                         your own: pruning tools, safety glasses and
                         gloves, work clothes and questions. We look
                         forward to see you attend this informative
                         session.
                         *The importance of quality pruning tools and
                         proper maintenance will be discussed in detail.

SHS Stained Glass Gazing Ball Workshop

Description:    In this workshop, Angie Skiba will be assisting
                         you in making your very own stained glass
                         gazing ball for your own garden. All materials
                         supplied. Cost per person is $65. Only ten
                         spots available! Fees are to be paid at the
                         time of registration. Please bring your own
                         lunch as lunch will not be provided.

1st Butterfield Scholarship

Description:    The Saskatoon Horticultural Society (SHS) 
                         invites applications from future Master
                         Gardeners to complete the U of S or
                         Saskatoon School of Horticulture Master
                          Gardener Certificate. These scholarships
                          will be awarded annually. Funds will be
                          distributed to the successful applicant(s)
                         in the form of reimbursement of the initial
                         registration fee and each of the 7 core
                         workshops as they are completed.Total amount
                         of scholarship is $600. All courses need to be
                         completed and the exam written before any
                         reimbursement is made.

Spring Plant and Garden Sale Fundraiser

Description:    The Saskatoon Horticultural Society (SHS)
                         invites the public to comeout to this fun-filled
                          fundraiser. Proceeds go to our bursary/
                         scholarship initiatives, website/newsletter and
                         workshops/tours held annually. Donate your
                          extra plants to the SHS plant sale and buy
                         a few new ones! Members can register and
                         setup a table to sell plants and other gardening
                         merchandise. Stay tuned for more information!

Prairie Water Gardening Society Swap & Shop

Description:    The Annual Prairie Water Gardening Society's
                         Swap & Shop is a great place to buy, sell,
                          or trade water plants, fish, and pond
                         accessories. It is free for members but for those
                         who are not members, you can purchase a
                          PWGS membership at the event.

SHS Home Grounds Award Competition

Description:    Share your passion for gardening by entering the
                        SHS Home Grounds Award Competition!
                        This competition is designed to encourage
                         beautification of residential properties and
                         to recognize the home gardener.
                         We are pleased to welcome Dutch Growers as
                         as the 2017 prize sponsor for 3 categories:

  • Overall Home Grounds Award
        $250 Dutch Growers gift cards
  • New yards- less than 5 years
        $100 Dutch Growers gift cards
  • Vegetable gardens
        $100 Dutch Growers gift cards

                        In addition the overall Home Grounds Award
                        winner will receive:

  • An engraved SHS plaque to keep for a year.
  • An engraved commemorative vase to keep.
  •                          Yards and gardens must be well maintained,
                            and should be reasonably free of weeds, insect
                            damage, and disease. Dead blooms and debris
                            should be removed and the entire area well
                            groomed.
                            The winners of each category will be featured
                            on the Passport tour held Saturday, July 29, 2017.

    Passport Tour

    Description:    A “Drive yourself,” self-guided tour of some of
                             Saskatoon’s finest gardens. There will be a limit
                             of only 250 people. Purchase your passport at
                             Early’s (2615 Lorne Avenue or 503 51 Street
                             East) or Dutch Growers (685 Reid Road) for
                             $15 per person. The Passport will reveal
                             information on yard locations. The winning
                             garden in SHS Home Grounds Award
                              Competition will be featured on this tour.
                              We will also have two educational components
                              highlighting different horticultural programs
                              in our city.

    Annual Volunteer Appreciation BBQ

    Description:    If you have volunteered with any of the SHS
                             activities and events this year you will be invited
                             to attend the annual Volunteer Appreciation

    Garage Sale

    Description:    It is time to clean-out your garage or shed! The
                             Saskatoon Horticultural Society (SHS) accepts
                             donations for its Garage Sale.
                             This includes: small furniture, dishes, utensils,
                             small appliances, books, children's toys,
                             ornamental items and accessories such as purses,
                             jewelry and scarves. There will also be,
                            gardening tools, pots, potted perennials,
                            gardening books and magazines.
                             Dropoff donations after Aug. 14 at
                             571 Adilman Dr. (Silverwood)
                             Proceeds from the sale go toward funding the
                             Butterfield and the Prairie Horticultural
                              Certificate Scholarships.

    Prairie Horticulture Certificate Scholarship

    Description:   The Saskatoon Horticultural Society (SHS)
                            invites applications for scholarship funding to
                            complete their Saskatchewan Prairie
                            Horticultural Certificate (PHC). A scholarship
                            will be awarded annually.Funds will be awarded
                            to the successful applicant in the form of
                            reimbursement for the initial registration fee and
                            each of the 9 required courses up to $1,000.

    Saskatoon Horticultural Society Bursary

    Description:  Open to full time students entering second or third
                           year, or part time students with a minimum of 48
                           accumulated credit units, in the Bachelor of
                           Science in Agriculture degree program. The
                           bursary total is $1,500. To be eligible,
                           candidates must demonstrate:

  • Financial need
  • Their interest in Horticulture by having successfully
    completed and/or registered in applicable courses
  • Application Deadline:     Sunday, October 15
